Waiting for the .xxx Domain - .xxx from a Web hoster’s Perspective
(Page 4 of 4 )
Adult websites tend to take up a lot of bandwidth; there’s no getting around this. But they also tend to be profitable, and any adult website with a .xxx domain will be forced to follow certain rules of conduct. This potentially makes for good customers and fewer complaints.
Mitch Keeler, owner of the Web Hosting Show (http://www.webhostingshow.com) and a prolific writer on web hosting topics, has an excellent grasp of the issue. From a web hoster’s point of view, “…the whole situation is nuts. In my opinion, it is just another domain name extension to offer more variety out there. Will it cattle in porn Web sites? Probably not…The thing that gets me mad is that this makes it easier to block content you don’t want to see. My mother will know that there is nothing she will ever want to see on a .xxx web site, so she can block all content from the browser from any .xxx domain…”
Mitch also points to the general irony of the protests. “When we have such a hard time blocking spam, viruses, spyware and junk from our computers, you would think the government would be all for making that easier to filter.” He also anticipates Tony Perkins’ objections. “I hate to burst any bubbles there might be out there, but yes, there is dirty adult material online. This would be the case with or without the .xxx domain name.”
Mitch particularly captures the importance of keeping the Internet a truly global phenomenon when he mentions the government report alluded to in the previous section of this article. “Now I don’t care if you are George Bush, John Kerry or Alfred E. Newman, but the idea of a government being able to control the Internet’s master database of domains is a scary thought indeed.”
