Not a Mirage: HostingCon 2006
HostingCon 2006, a major conference and exhibition devoted entirely to the web hosting industry, took place July 17 through 19 at the Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. With panels and networking during the day and parties continuing into the wee hours, it’s no wonder the event was so well-attended. Keep reading to find out about some of the highlights.
Alas, Las Vegas is too far from South Florida for this reporter to have covered the conference. But it seems as if everyone else made it a point to be there. More than 1200 web hosting professionals attended, with more than a quarter of the registrations pouring in during the two weeks before the start of the conference. The exhibition hall boasted booths from 77 vendors. These included well-known companies such as Microsoft, Verio, BusinessWire, cPanel, and Web Host Industry Review.
While one always must play down the hype that goes along with any conference, this one seems have been a stand-out, with many high points. With three full days of panels, a keynote every day, after hours parties, and a number of vendors planning their own special events, no attendee ever had to worry about running out of things to do. Indeed, it's hard to know where to start when describing the goings-on.
The first day featured two special events: a networking reception in the exhibit hall, and an after hours party sponsored by cPanel. The networking session (which included drinks) was well-attended. The after hours party was held at the JET nightclub at the Mirage, and was so much fun that attendees were posting thank-yous to cPanel on one web hosting forum. One poster wrote wryly, "I don't have a clue what time I got in or what happened, but I think it was a good night and I woke up with a large amount of casino chips in my bed."
