Customers Demand, Get More from Web Hosts - Content Management

Content management systems (CMS) help websites with dynamic content keep it organized and manageable. Since web pages that are updated regularly encourage visitors to return more frequently, many site owners look for ways to keep their content new and fresh. The best way, of course, is to add new content – which of course brings up the issue of keeping it under control. That’s where Netfirms and Host Color come in.
Netfirms added a hosted version of WordPress to its product line. This is particularly nice for its customers, because WordPress is not only a CMS, but a blogging tool. Blogging provides an easy way to keep website content fresh, as anyone who has ever read or written a blog knows. Netfirms customers are given a pre-install option during signup; there is also a one-click installer in the control panel. By hosting the software, the company’s customers do not have to manually install the software themselves.
Importantly, WordPress boasts an easy-to-use interface. Given that Netfirms markets its service to individuals and small- and medium-sized businesses, its customers need something that they can pick up and use easily, without having to learn a lot of overly technical details. The software makes it easy to change the look and feel of a website without changing the content, and offers many useful features, such as multiple user-permission levels and robust spam protection. According to Jason Matheson, Netfirms product manager, "Web designers can build any style of website with WordPress and then choose to either update the content themselves, or allow clients, who don't need to know HTML, to handle that task."
Meanwhile, Host Color added pre-ready Mambo installation to its hosting plans. Mambo is the leading open source CMS. Host Color customers will create their Mambo site by using a simple interface within Host Color’s control panel. As with any hosted content management system, the site owner does not have to do the whole set up procedure. The automated installation copies the files and sets up the Mambo database for them, saving the owner a lot of time and money, and leaving him only with the task of formatting the content of the site.
"When developing the Mambo installer we made an effort to make it as simple as possible while keeping the actual program as its creators intended it. We have taken the hassle out installing Mambo, since open source applications sometimes require technical expertice to deploy. Still site owners should remember to keep the Mambo software up to date through its in-built update option." says Stanimir Dimitrov, Host Color's Power Tools developer.
