Introduction to Hosting Websites - Web Hosting Pros and Cons
(Page 2 of 4 )
While there are plenty of benefits to hosting your own website, it is more important that you are aware of the pitfalls. You must be absolutely sure that you do want to commit yourself to hosting your own website. If you are not sure and you get into the process and find that it is just too much, then the best you will get is a lot of wasted time and money.
One down side of hosting your own websites is that you have to take care of everything yourself. If you experience an issue or want an upgrade, you cannot contact your web host’s customer support. You have to put in the time and effort to get whatever you want done.
There is also the fact that unless you are specializing, you are not going to be as good at hosting websites as a professional website host is. They will have more resources, more time, and more expertise to utilize. Although this can be slightly mitigated by hiring the right IT professional, you are still not going to have the same capability that you otherwise would.
One major factor is that you are paying for the full price of a server and its bandwidth, as opposed to just what you need from a web host. Unless you are completely filling up your server with websites, there will be a lot of wasted money in the purchasing and running of a full server.
On the flip side, there are major benefits to hosting your own website; otherwise, nobody would ever do it. The most obvious is that you are able to have absolute control over your website. If you want to add more programming languages or change the operating system or hosting environment, then you are capable of doing that at any point. The only limitations are the ones that you place upon yourself.
Another benefit is that you do not have to deal with a hosting company. If you have very specific and unusual needs for your website, then chances are that you will not be able to find a website host that will work perfectly for you. The only real option that will leave you completely satisfied is hosting your own website.
A side benefit is that you now have control over a server that you can use for any purpose. Servers are quite powerful and can do much more than just host websites. This gives you a great deal of freedom to experiment and develop.
