Fighting Internet Distractions: Productive Telecommuting - WriteRoom/Dark Room
(Page 3 of 4 )
Hog Bay Software’s WriteRoom/Dark Room applications are primarily geared towards writers who are finding it difficult to sit at their computers -- distraction free -- and simply write. Think of it as a minimalist writing tool, as these programs basically take your computer into the wayback machine by presenting you with nothing more than a full-screen, monochrome window that’s devoid of taskbars and menus. It’s very similar to typing on an old-fashioned word processor, with every other frill and thrill of the modern PC hidden away.
If you are a writer, this may be just the thing for you; no more spelling suggestions, no more formatting or, as the Hog Bay Software site puts it, “If you've found it getting harder to focus on the words you want to write, if you've forgotten how great it feels to really write distraction-free, allow WriteRoom to help you rediscover your muse.”
There is a problem with that. It may be hard for some writers or telecommuters to “rediscover their muse” when all it takes to go from working in WriteRoom to messing around online is opening up another web browser. Sure, it’s not the job of your software application to babysit you and make sure you do your work, but some people need less of a push and more of a shove in the right direction, which is why they may want to consider the most serious type of distraction-free software.
