Choosing a Website Host - Restrictions

The primary identifier between different website hosting plans is their restrictions on their accounts. Quite often, one provider will have multiple different account types that are only differentiated by their restrictions. These restrictions include file storage, bandwidth, e-mail accounts, ftp accounts, and database accounts.

File storage is the single most looked at feature of any website hosting plan. The numbers can vary widely between plans, but a standard business website will only require about 20 MB of file storage. Almost all available plans will offer quite a bit more than that, but unless you are hosting multiple websites or your website has different needs than standard, just keep in mind that the file storage does not matter that much.

If you are hosting multiple websites or need more than standard for any reason, then you should carefully analyze how much space you will need. You should not buy one plan simply because it offers substantially more storage space. As previously mentioned, it is really not that important. Most plans will offer the option of purchasing additional storage space for an additional monthly fee.

The second most looked at number is the bandwidth that a website host offers per month. Again, this number is not that important for a standard business. Very few websites will use more than 1 GB of bandwidth per month. Most hosts will offer at least that much fairly standard. Just as with storage, if you think you will need more than that, then you should carefully analyze your needs and determine whether it is worth spending more for a plan that offers more.

Some of the less looked at numbers are also quite important. Depending on the size of your company, the number of e-mail accounts could be severely limiting. You want to make sure that the number of e-mail inboxes being offered is substantially more than you will need. That is not something that you want to be limited by, and many hosting accounts provide unlimited e-mail addresses.

Although it is not normally as much of a problem for the standard business, ftp accounts and database accounts can also be limiting factors. This applies more for people who are hosting multiple websites on the same account. If they want to have a separate account for each website, then they should make sure that these numbers will not be overly limiting. If this is not an issue, then you do not need to pay any attention to these numbers.
