XOHM: Really an Alternative?
Sprint Nextel Corporation has recently launched its 4G WiMAX service, the phenomenon known as XOHM, in a select city. This mobile WiMAX network, should it ever be available on a nationwide level, could quickly change the way we look at on-the-go Internet and mobile usage. In this article we'll take a look at what it is, how it works, what makes it different, and its potential future.
How Will Sprint Measure Up in the Internet Speed Race?
Though XOHM isn’t widely available and very newly out of testing phases, it’s already won the Best of WiMAX World Award for Industry Innovation (2007). Impressed? Just keep reading to learn more about what XOHM can (potentially) do for your Internet usage.
Officially, Sprint’s XOHM launched in Baltimore, Maryland on September 29, 2008, and it’s already creating quite the stir. Through XOHM, Sprint hopes to change the meaning of high-speed Internet by making everything move faster than any other service. In this world filled with mobile devices, digital cameras and laptop users, the need for speed is an obsession. Could XOHM be just the thing to give Internet users their higher-than-high-speed fix? Sprint is certainly hoping this will be the case.
What’s an XOHM?
Sprint’s XOHM is based on the 802.16e standard set by WiMAX (the thing that makes wireless Internet possible). If all goes according to Sprint’s plans, XOHM will be compatible with WiMAX devices such as laptops, digital cameras and handheld equipment (even mobile phones). In other words, Sprint is planning on using XOHM as an alternative for cable and DSL home users as well as cellular Internet.
But why use XOHM? Don’t cable and DSL already work just fine on their own? Isn’t wireless Internet already easy to obtain? What’s so special about XOHM?
Sprint’s XOHM takes things to the next level in a way that appeals strongly to many consumers and online users: it’s faster.

XOHM offers up its very own Web site (http://www.xohm.com/) where you can learn much more about what this service does for you. Access the “learn more” option on the home page to enjoy the XOHM learning center (pictured above), designed to help anyone become an expect on the subject of high-speed through Sprint.
